Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Symphony in F minor, H1/49 (La Passione)
Niccolo Jommelli (1714-1774): Miserere (Pietà, pietà signore) for 2 sopranos and strings (North American premiere) with Christine Brandes, soprano, Stephanie Houtzeel, mezzo-soprano
The Grand Tour's opening concert features the North American premiere of Niccolo Jommelli's Miserere. This imposing work for two sopranos and strings was written months before the composer's death in 1774 for the incomparable singers Anna de Amicis and Giuseppe Aprile. The work posthumously achieved as much fame as any of his beloved operas and was performed well into the 19th century. Also on the program is Haydn's early masterpiece; the dark, emotionally charged Symphony in F-minor (Hob 1/49, La Passione). Soprano Christine Brandes has made a stellar career in Europe and the United States appearing on both the opera and concert stage. She has received the highest praise for her interpretations of Bach, Handel, Rameau, Haydn, and Mozart. Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Houtzeel specializes in the trouser-roles of Strauss, Mozart and baroque composers. She has been heard in the opera houses of Zurich, Lisbon, Graz, Antwerp, the Bastille and Lyon (December 2008) and in the major concert halls and festivals of Europe. |

| Evan Goldman has six weeks to go before he turns 13, and after an idyllic childhood in New York City, he's just been uprooted and brought to Appleton, Indiana with his mother. He has one mission: get all the cool kids in school to come to his Bar Mitzvah, or else spend the rest of his academic career banished to the land of the Geeks. "13" is a show about finding out who you are, finding out what you need, and finding out what's really important. Book by Dan Elish, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, direction by Todd Graff, choreography by Michele Lynch, and musical direction by David O, and featuring a cast of thirteen 13-year-olds and a six-piece teenage rock band. |

JODY SPERLING/TIME LAPSE DANCE
presents
Ghosts . . . and More:
A Spectacular Two-Week Season
With her electrifying program "Ghosts . . . and More," Jody Sperling transports the billowing undulations and iridescent illuminations of modern-dance pioneer Loie Fuller (1862-1928) into an experimental 21st-century context. Through the use of light, shadow, projections and technological costuming, Sperling's trio "Ghosts" plays with an elusiveness physical presence.
Seven students from Barnard College guest with the company to perform the NYC premiere of "Ballet of Light," a re-imagination of Fuller's 1908 original. This cinematic spectacle takes the viewer on a geographic voyage through the sea, blazing fires, the heavens and finally into a garden of butterflies. The evening also includes the world premiere of Sperling's "Bang for the Buck," a comic circus-collage that probes the relationship between a performer's effort and the audience's "payoff." Rounding out the program is a revival of "A Leg Up, which riffs on the exuberant antics of acrobats and contortionists captured in early films. |

| John Adams's contemporary masterpiece explores a momentous episode of modern history: the creation of the first atomic bomb. Composer John Adams has developed a reputation for mining the tremendous mythic and symbolic potential of contemporary stories and events. With Doctor Atomic, he and his collaborator Peter Sellars have created an opera that addresses some of humanity's most complex themes, with colorful and sensuous music that appeals to audiences in a way rarely achieved by a 21st-century composer. |

| ABOUT AVENUE Q
"THE MOST FUN ONSTAGE THIS YEAR!"
- The New Yorker
What is AVENUE Q about?
AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod -- a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. |

| Brecht's revolutionary first play is a disturbing vision of immorality expressed through one man's insatiable hunger for experience. A young poet journeys through an urban underworld, blindly striking out against conventional values and leaving in his wake the corpses of lovers and friends. With haunting imagery and grotesque characters, Baal provides a telling insight into our own age. |

Translated by Robert Bagg.
In this tale of unrequited love, Hippolytus and his smitten stepmother are pawns caught in a battle between Artemis and Aphrodite. Sharon Fogarty has been co-artistic director of Mabou Mines theatre company since 1999. She has produced many of the company’s works including such award-winning productions as Red Beads, Mabou Mines DollHouse, and Song for New York. She also wrote and directed an original music-theatre piece, Cara Lucia, inspired by the life of James Joyce’s daughter Lucia.
The Minor Latham Playhouse is located at 118 Milbank Hall on the Barnard
College campus. Due to construction, the best way to enter campus is

| “The Italian painter Giorgio Brogi sets up arresting vibrations between shapes and chromatics. The works are composed of jauntily placed hard-edged forms: bars, rectangles, bands and squares, basic schemes in which lines often veer slightly from the straight. …The sharp color contrasts and slightly eccentric geometries suggest a sophisticated semaphore system that roundly fulfills its first duty of catching the eye.”
– Grace Glueck, The New York Times
This exhibition – curated by Gianni Romano – marks the first US showing of a series of works, both digital prints and canvases, inspired by the “Out of Sync” concept which has been at the hub of the artist’s activity in recent years.
The works displayed in New York are accompanied by a loop using four short films made by four illustrious directors. These shorts, by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Bernardo Bertolucci, Carlo Lizzani, and Jean-Luc Godard, are chosen by Giorgio Brogi to explain – in cinematic language – the correspondence between his vision and the vision of these directors.
The video-episodes and Brogi’s own video, “Out of Sync,” will be projected at the same time, setting up an interpretative dialogue of exchange and comparison on themes that concern us but fail to touch us, such as indifference, agony, poetry, and love.
The “Out of Sync” project is constantly refreshed with new material and the locations it inhabits: it is a play of mirrors, a book, an environmental video show, a video-painting and performance; it concludes with the works presented in New York, and will be presented in other forms and sequences in Milan and Naples in the course of 2009.

Inspired by Eugene O'Neill's play of the same name, a merchant marine ship is loaded with munitions and heading to England during WWI. The men on board suspect a man of being a German spy and
the paranoia sets in until the unthinkable happens.

| On October 24th 2008, we will travel through time exploring our Latin roots and confronting the new identities we have taken on in New York City. Through music, dance, food, spoken word and more, Latino and non Latino students alike from across the Barnard/Columbia campus will come together, enjoy, and share their common traditions that function as familiar reminders of where they come from. This year, for the FIRST TIME EVER, the LHM Cultural Showcase will also include a fashion show showcasing the hottest designers that have that City swag, including but not limited to: Triple 5 Soul, L-R-G, ZooYork, MethodsNYC, & The Brooklyn Circus. |

| In 1911-12, the Romanian movie director Grigore Brezianu and the financial tycoon Leon Popescu teamed up to make the 2 hour long movie "Romania's Independence" - an as faithful as possible screen adaptation of the real Independence War that had been fought in 1877. Now, "The Rest is Silence" tells us, in a loose and half-fictionalized way, the story of this movie making, while commenting on Romanian and European history during the 20th century.
This screening will be held in Romanian/French with English subtitles, and has often been praised as having Hollywood-level production value.
